Environmental Values

Winther Browne recognizes that its business operations have an impact on the Environment and it is the policy of the Company to minimize this effect. Winther Browne also accepts that its supply chain also shares this responsibility and all suppliers will be monitored as to their commitment to minimizing the damage to the environment, upholding their employee’s human rights and the continual improvement of a safe and healthy working environment. These matters will be monitored annually through visits and photographic diaries. Due care shall be exercised in the disposal of waste products and action put in hand to minimize it. All packaging and waste materials, including wood residues, created through all aspects of both internal and external processing will be recycled or reduced where possible and shall be reviewed every year together with ideas to aid with energy conservation during the environmental review. This environmental review will also schedule the monitoring of our suppliers. Management at all levels are committed to ensuring environmental issues are considered when making decisions or planning work. They will encourage all staff to act in accordance with this Policy and training will be given, where required. The need for training is periodically assessed by Department Heads and a Training Programme is reviewed annually.

Wood Products

The Company supports National and International efforts focused on achieving sustainable and ethically sound forest management worldwide. Winther Browne has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification and will purchase timber from FSC sources whenever possible.

The Company will not use labels or certificates which include claims of sustainable forest management, unless supported by the FSC.

Forest Stewardship Council

Winther Browne & co Ltd is accredited by SGS Group for chain of custody of FSC products. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, not for profit, non-government organisation based in Bonn, Germany, that provides standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry. Founded in 1993, FSC's mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world forests. FSC forest management standards are based on FSC's 10 Principles and Criteria of responsible forest management. The FSC's governance structure ensures that it is independent of any one interest group by requiring an equal balance in power between its environmental, social and economic chambers as well as a balance between interests from the economic north and south. Since its inception in 1993, FSC has distinguished itself through its: Major retailers in Europe, North America, South America and Asia ask for FSC certification when ordering forest products so they can assure their customers about the origin of the products they are buying. Winther Browne is committed to sourcing quality products and developing partnerships with customers and suppliers who share common principles for fair-trading.

We believe that all workers are to be treated fairly regardless of their religion, gender or ethnic origin. Winther Browne recognizes that its business operations have an impact on its employees’ standards of living and insists that all health and safety requirements be met for working conditions, including the provision of free protective equipment and clothing.

We respect the right of our employees to join independent trade unions and ensure that outworkers and subcontractors comply with all of the above employment conditions.

Winther Browne will ensure that all of its suppliers only employ workers of the legal minimum age within the region that they are employed.

Visits to all Suppliers manufacturing plants are conducted before trading commences, to establish that working conditions for employees are acceptable to Winther Browne. Subsequent inspections of premises are made to promote continuous improvements to working conditions where required.

Ethical Survey

As a company we are committed to sourcing quality merchandise and developing partnerships with suppliers who share common principals for fair-trading. We require the same principles to be adopted by all those involved in the supply of merchandise to Winther Browne & Co Ltd. at all times.

The following details are to be completed by suppliers (when required) where proposed customers do not have their own established standards. It is designed to record important information about the factories, which manufacture Winther Browne products around the World and will help to demonstrate that the factories either meet or are working towards Winther Browne’s principals for fair-trading as set out in our Ethical Standards Policy.
