Our History

Winther Browne was established in 1893 by Mr Winther, a Norwegian dowel manufacturer. Harold Browne joined as a clerk in 1915 and in 1919 bought the company, which then sourced dowels from many countries  for the furniture trade.

Simon Browne joined in 1964 and is currently Chairman. His involvement has resulted in the growth of the company and development of the business in DIY, Interior Design and Exports.

Major firsts for the Company include in the 1990’s the introduction of the first flat pack DIY fire surround, and in 2001 flat pack radiator cabinets in MDF, finished white and wood veneers.

2009 marked a departure from tradition with the appointment of a CEO from outside of the family. Winther Browne is rightly proud of it's history, but focused on our future.
